Taulbee Survey 2025: Annual Report

Computing Research Association

Artificial Intelligence & Data Science Programs

This year, in Section B, we introduced questions aimed at better understanding the direction computing programs are taking with regard to Artificial Intelligence. Specifically, whether computing units are introducing standalone Artificial Intelligence programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels and whether they include those numbers in their Taulbee responses. Below are the findings from this year’s responses for both the Artificial Intelligence questions alongside similar Data Science program questions introduced in prior years.

New AI Programs

Table AI-a: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Program Presence by Degree Level (2025)
Status Bachelor's (# units) Master's (# units) Doctoral (# units)
No 77 (57.0%) 79 (58.1%) 119 (87.5%)
No, but one is in the planning stages 25 (18.5%) 19 (14.0%) 5 (3.7%)
No, there is one at the institution but our academic unit is not involved 1 (0.7%) 1 (0.7%) 0 (0%)
Other, please specify 14 (10.4%) 10 (7.4%) 6 (4.4%)
Yes, housed in our academic unit 16 (11.9%) 21 (15.4%) 4 (2.9%)
Yes, we participate in an interdisciplinary collaborative but Artificial Intelligence is in its own unit or housed in another unit 2 (1.5%) 6 (4.4%) 2 (1.5%)
Total 135 (100.0%) 136 (100.0%) 136 (100.0%)
